Cutting Back

I've just been thinking something profoundly deep:

Perhaps I should begin taking, each week,

Two-day vacations, starting on Mondays;

That way, I could whittle down my workweeks

To three-day breezes.

And you know, this expedient seems to make sense.

After all, I'm not getting any younger, by the day.

Not that I don't like what I do;

Daydreaming and stargazing are noble professions, to be sure.

Still, a guy has to keep an eye on his energy.

As for the lost treasure of the Sierra Madre

That would accrue from losing Monday and Tuesday,

I always say what my old man always said:

"Somethin' from nothin' is still zippity-doo-da day."

Anyway, I'm a pro bono subcontractor for myself.

The more deeply I think about it,

The more I'm cottoning to the idea of cutting back.

Three days at the mind's grindstone

Should still allow me to get all my cogitating done.

Face it, retirement's not getting any easier.
