Calling It Like It Isn't and Is
Some folks are calling it a "crisis of confidence" —
You know, seeing our top athletes
In track and field, cycling, swimming, baseball
Relying on doping, to keep cheating the record books,
And our politicians and judges
Engaging in bribery, collusion, conflict of interest,
In exchange for quid pro quo favors.
Others are calling it "unethical malfeasance,"
"Blatant crimes against the nation's conscience,"
"Egregiously venal, felonious breaches of law,"
"Nefarious, pernicious abrogations of standards
That, supposedly, differentiate us from lesser beasts,
Elevate us above the greater apes,"
"A shameless, deludedly hubristic sense of entitlement."
I'm calling it — all of it — by the only names I know,
Since my personal vocabulary is highly limited,
Unwilling to torque words, phrases, notions
Into what are called "euphemisms,"
Incapable of whitewashing a mud-caked swine,
Just before trucking it to the auction barn:
"Horseshit," "bullshit," "dogshit," "dungbeetleshit."
