Remembering Tomorrow

This first Monday morning of the new month,

I sit, with my coffee cup poised,

Sorting through my most recent memories of tomorrow.

I do this kind of mental prestidigitation often.

It helps me keep things ordered,

Allows me a more prophetic perspective on yesterday.

After all, taking the longer, wider, deeper view

Enhances life's continuity.

I don't get lost, as easily, when groping, like an inchworm,

From moment to moment, edge to center to edge,

On a leaf, cut loose from time's cliff-rooted tree,

Fluttering, in an oblique breeze, over the invisible abyss.

Call it oracularity, preternatural perspicacity, vision.

As far back as I can recall

And as far into the future as I'm capable of surveying,

I've always been able to consult tomorrow,

As though it were an old friend or enemy reconciled,

Always invited it into my daily consultations,

Allowed it to have its sagacious say-so,

Knowing its crucial testimony needed to be recorded

Before I could afford to let go of the past.

Otherwise, the fluttering leaf would have disappeared

Into the swirling nebulae,

Leaving the inchworm traversing an endless present.
