Advancements in Learning
In the forties and early fifties,
We had to hide, from parents, priests, and teachers,
Our Batmans, Action Comics, Classics Illustrateds.
They, like rats, were breeders of bad reading habits,
Juvenile delinquency, the degradation of education itself.
Now, I read that teachers are encouraging students,
By using comic books in the classroom,
Hoping to catch their distracted, apathetic attention,
The conventional wisdom being that panels and balloons
Are less intimidating than textbooks
And that kids can more easily relate to that style,
Express themselves more conversationally,
Learn, from the Incredible Hulk and Amazing Spider-Man,
How to get along better, appreciate literature,
Think critically, succeed in life and love.
