"Go Thy Way"

                     For Alvin Goldfarb,

1917–2008

"Go thy way" —

The valedictory for a humble, dignified man,

Whose life of nine inspired decades

Enlightened multitudes he never knew,

Through his civic and religious philanthropy.

"Go thy way,"

On the journey home, to your heritage,

Under God's nurturing eye,

Knowing He banishes all loneliness,

Makes of the soul an eternity.

Now, night has lapsed into absolute silence.

His casket is installed in the mausoleum,

Beside that of his wife, Jeanette,

And his three children — Jane, Bob, and Jim —

Have dispersed into their private griefs.

I've withdrawn into the space he made, for me,

That's filled with memories twenty years deep,

Which can't be ravaged by sadness,

Where I say, with his twinkle in my eye,

"Go thy way, Al."
