Morning Headlines, September 30, 2008
Collective societal anxiety, panic have set in.
You can see it written all over the nation's face,
Reflected in this a.m.'s newspaper headlines:
"DEFIANT HOUSE REJECTS HUGE BAILOUT;
STOCKS PLUNGE; NEXT STEP IS UNCERTAIN"
(New York Times);
"Bailout Plan Rejected, Markets Plunge,
Forcing New Scramble to Solve Crisis"
(Wall Street Journal);
"Dow plunges 778, parties
point fingers as rescue fails"
(USA Today).
Now, everyone's holding his breath,
As if walking as fast as he can, past a cemetery —
Economists, politicians, financiers, Main Streeters.
That nobody seems to know what comes next —
Whether it'll be mystery meat in a soup kitchen
Or selling pencils in a cup —
Is more than unnerving, disturbing, heart-stopping,
In light of last year's stratospheric Dow,
Which is now bottom-feeding at murky fathoms.
It's mystifying, stupefying, far worse.
Soon, a rolling suicide pandemic, like a tsunami,
Will crash onto all the shores of the earth.
