Mid-October Drama

A Saturday-afternoon high-school football game

With the elements of a classical Greek epic

Fused with Shakespearean emotional intensity:

Two teams struggling for dominance,

Down for down, play for play, yard for yard,

Bone, sinew, and muscle locked in struggle,

Fate changing with each run, pass, kick,

Back and forth — 7-0, 7-6, 15-6,

15-15 after two quarters —

The contest's outcome very much up in the air,

Up for grabs, literally,

The second half a reprise of the opening curtain,

As if that first fierce battle had never happened

Or, if it had, was of no consequence,

Irrelevant to the day's denouement.

A whistle, a thundering of bodies, a clash,

Impasse giving way to resolution,

One side's spirits spent, the other's ignited —

15-15, 21-15, 23-15, 30-15 —

The digital scoreboard's minutes, seconds shifting,

Racing toward 00:00, game's end, history...

All this reenacted on thousands of grassy stages,

In America's storied mid-October theaters —

Catharsis played out in adolescent pageantry.
