Giveth and Taketh

The forces at work, in this global economy,

Are far too enormous, abstruse, for the experts,

Let alone lay 401(k) investors or computers, to fathom.

All anyone can know, for quirky certain,

With unreliable, thirdhand verifiability,

Is that what one hand giveth, the other taketh away.

That the Dow Jones rose meteorically, yesterday,

By a record-setting 936 points, is now history.

Already, the world is anxious for today's opening bell,

To tell whether its bellwether for financial health

Is, if not fully restored, well on the mend —

Whether, indeed, Lazarus will be revived from the dead.

But even if the market posts a week of increases,

Substantial advances, climbs back to, beyond,

Its October 9, '07, all-time-high close of 14,164,

Would we call it manna from heaven or a Fata Morgana?

And would we remember that prosperity

Is but one hand of the greedy, misanthropic devil?
