Give and Take
Why I write
(A clipped, vowel-chiming trigger line, if ever there was one)
Is none of your business, I assure you.
So don't try to pry it out of me —
An answer, a justification, rationalization, raison d'être
As to the internal forces that motivate me to compose poetry —
Even though I know, better than most anyone,
What perils inhere
In disclosures as risky as those which surface, regardless,
When I dare open my soul, to outside scrutiny.
It's a dangerous game of give-and-take.
I give my heart, unconditionally; you take liberties, with my gift,
Then leave me in the grip of your silence,
Adrift, amidst the agonizing loneliness
Of never knowing how you really read me, if at all.
