Specter

Sadly, tragically, pathetically, it's that old specter again,

Rising, Phoenix-like, out of the ashes,

The financial shambles of the housing bubble,

The decimation of a nation's golden-goose nest egg

Laid by a conspiracy of avaricious Wall Street prestidigitators

Skilled in the dark arts of alchemy,

By which mortgages, predicated on subprime loans,

Pushed onto those without a chance, a hope, of repaying them,

Were transformed into complex, high-risk derivatives

And passed, endlessly, down the greed-frenzy feeding chain,

To the next gullible party eager to take its quick spoils

And pass the hot-potato bundle along, to the next asbestos gloves...

That old specter as ancient as the renegade betrayer Judas

And those blood-libeling Jews accused of murdering Jesus,

Causing his crucifixion, at the hands of the dread Roman occupiers.

What is he talking about, fulminating over? you're wondering.

It's that photo of an agonizing former Federal Reserve chairman,

Alan Greenspan, the "maestro," taking his turn as goat, scapegoat,

The object of merciless accusatory mockery from a stunned rabble

Looking, desperately, to alleviate its own complicity,

By deflecting the blame onto the ugly-faced Jew —

That farblondjet, chagrined, wizened, farbisseneh punim,

With the slithering-snake eyebrows, balding pate,

Elephant ears, Coke-bottle glasses, oversize schnozzola —

The stereotypical devil of this entire debacle,

Who, during his Bush days of promoting "irrational exuberance,"

Discouraged regulation, encouraged risk, as policy givens.

So now you have it — we have it, him, the ultimate culprit,

Which should, for all our anger, fear, console us, somewhat,

Knowing that, once again, a Jew can die for our sins.
