Most Important Words
Tonight, I call forth my most important words,
Implore them to console me, in this time of high anxiety,
After formally saying good-bye, this afternoon, to Janie,
Savior of my midlife, two decades ago,
When the end of my first twenty-year love descended.
But they fail to assuage the pain of separation
Waging full-scale war against my gentler angels,
Who still lament the failure of our relationship,
The union of two incomplete spirits that, tragically,
Never really had a chance to coalesce
Yet tried their inadequate hearts' best,
Out of a flawed yearning for passion and love,
To make a go of their incompatible souls,
Knowing, in the very marrow of their fragile bones,
That this day had come, long before they'd even begun.
