Trust
Did I really wake up in America,
This rainbow-treed fifth-of-November Wednesday morning,
Or am I dreaming, hallucinating a grandiose improbability?
All I can think is that yesterday couldn't possibly have happened,
And I'm not even black,
A man with slavery in his denigrated genealogy,
Rather a white guy who's lived, most of his six decades,
Apologizing for being a resident of a border state
With a shameful history of flagrant segregation and race baiting.
But it did happen, and today is a day unlike any other.
We've entrusted our lives, into Barack Obama's keeping,
And he must be able to trust us, with his fate.
