Cause for Alarm
This morning, I fell under the spell of a telling anomaly:
My alarm clock forgot to set itself, last night.
Perhaps it was an honest mistake,
An oversight — the kind humans make all the time,
Like misplacing keys, forgetting appointments, not paying a bill.
Whatever the case,
I was disgracefully, humiliatingly late to work.
I incurred the demonstrative wrath of my sector chief,
The apoplectic disdain of my quadrant associates.
Even my PC seemed to resent my tardiness; it crashed.
I can't say that this was the first time I've overslept.
I've had a few lapses, through the years,
But nothing that caused repercussions.
If my alarm clock forgets to set itself again, tonight,
I'll take matters into my own hands — something drastic.
