A Tragedy in Three Acts
Everywhere, across this overextended nation of the brave
(Whose citizens, defying Franklin's aphorism about pennies,
Have forgotten how to save),
Multinational corporations, iconic century-old companies,
Local cafés, five-and-dimes, garages, beauty shops,
Clothing outlets, movie theaters, furniture stores
Are crying Uncle Sam, closing, left, right, down the middle,
Shouting, "I've had more than my share of enough!
I'm going out of business, calling it quits, packing it in!"
Next will crumble those grand institutions of the republic
Which define commerce, sustenance, transportation —
Banks, grocery stores, filling stations —
Leaving, from sea to tarnished sea, just the pillars of society,
Without which the human spirit couldn't possibly exist:
Churches, bars, and funeral homes.
