Just One Line
When I feel most in need of affection,
A warm, face-to-face embrace, kiss on the lips,
To remind me that somebody cares about me,
That I'm yet connected to the universe,
Not as a boulder, a salt dome, a bristlecone pine,
But as a sentient creature desperately needing love —
Physical and emotional nurturing
(The fundamental reason, I have to believe,
For two human beings to connect with each other) —
I resort to the oldest trick in my soul's notebook:
Seeking out its next empty page
And setting penpoint to paper,
To discover something gentle, sensitive, kind,
Perhaps not even a poem but just one line
That expresses my desire to say, "I belong."
