Hindsight
As fast as the hydrogen gas in the Hindenburg exploded,
While that vast zeppelin was dropping its ropes,
To land at a mooring mast in America,
That's exactly how fast my life-force escaped me,
When I died, a year later, in Berlin, during Kristallnacht —
My bloodied German citizenship null and void.
Perhaps I should have anticipated such disenfranchisement,
Estrangement from the grudgingly tolerant society
Into which I believed I'd assimilated...but I didn't.
Now, in this strange, vaporous twilight hindsight of mine,
I realize that the Hindenburg contained enough Giftgas
To exterminate six million Jews...and it did.
