Zimbabwe, Mugabe: 2008
How can it possibly be
That a country once considered a model of financial stability,
The breadbasket of sub-Saharan Africa,
Is now a nation of almost ten million wretched human beings,
In which 16 percent of the population suffers from HIV,
A quarter of all the children are orphaned,
Life expectancy has plummeted, in less than two decades,
From sixty-three to forty-two years,
And where, since August, cholera has claimed 13,960 souls?
And how can it possibly be
That a sovereign state's economy can run a rate of inflation
That looks, on paper, like this: 231,000,000 percent?
Sadly, the answer is too transparent, too easily explained.
All it takes is one corrupt, tyrannical, insane president
Wielding fear and murder to protect himself from his people.
