The Edge

'Tis the season, the Christmas Nativity season,

When people get together, to celebrate their humanity,

Revel in their festive blessings,

Remind themselves that family, friends, and love

Are the best possessions of all,

For costing less than nothing, save a touch of kindness —

A visit to a neighbor, for eggnog and cookies,

A rose bouquet's surprise arrival,

On the doorstep of someone forever special.

And here you are, on a Friday night, by yourself,

In a restaurant spangled with star-white lights,

Surrounded by happy, animated spirits,

Not even bothering to ask why you're so isolated,

Because you already know:

It's you who've brought this emptiness on yourself,

Caused the sky to fall on all you've been becoming,

The earth to rise around you, take you under,

Leaving your frozen, bleeding soul stranded,

Teetering on the farthest dread edge of humanity,

With Christmas looming over you,

About to push you into the depths of your desperation.
