First Dawn

Even at 9:00 a.m.,

On this crystalline, sunstruck Thursday —

The virgin new year's birthday — the streets are empty.

Nobody's going to work, today; everyone's staying home.

Thank God the season's frenzied shopping is done,

For another eleven months, anyway.

Quiescence and solitude are this morning's gracious hosts.

They've invited me to partake of their tranquillity.

How can I possibly refuse?

Being alone, self-reliant, independent can become a habit,

The habit a raging addiction, just like breathing.

I crave anonymity's sublime tantalizing of my psyche,

Require its all-consuming reliance on my compliance,

To sustain my existence as a speck, an atom, of clay,

Despite my abbreviated mortality.

Just now, I could be the only creature on earth.

Perhaps this dawn of 2009

Is the annunciation of my soul's coming of agelessness.
