The Pros and Cons of Illinois Politics
In two separate constitutional spectacles, nine days apart,
This dire, winter-dismal tail end of January,
The country has borne stunned witness
To Illinois's two highest-profile politicians making history:
Its junior U.S. senator and its two-term governor.
In this extended week, both men — both Democrats —
Were administered oaths,
By the Chief Justices of the nation and the state,
One sworn in, to the office of President of the United States,
The other sworn out, from his gubernatorial office, impeached,
But not before orchestrating a last-ditch media blitz,
To gather support for his combative pleas of innocence,
Despite FBI wiretap evidence of his lies, deceptions
(Selling of jobs, seats, lucrative sinecures, favors,
For contributions to his reelection coffers)...
A campaign played out on TV talk shows
Running the gamut from Larry King Live to The View,
Almost as if he were Barack Obama, stumping for votes,
Not Rod Blagojevich, promising to do the people's work,
Buying time before the guillotine severs his political head —
The last act of public-service disgrace he'll ever star in,
A one-man, three-legged-dog-and-pony drawing-room farce,
Heckled and booed by all fifty-nine state senators.
Tonight, Barack rests comfortably, in his new house,
While Blago awaits transfer to his new digs...in Joliet.
