"Life Goes On"

It used to be, during severe economic crises,

That people suffering privation

Would stoically proclaim, "Life goes on,"

And muster their guts, muscle power,

Screw up their fortitude,

To steel themselves against the worst.

It had much to do with innate faith,

America's inherent belief in its Dream,

The bedrock tenet that hard work and purpose

Were all it took to straighten out any curve,

Succeed at reversing adversity,

With each generation better off than the last.

Today, we see things abruptly degrading,

Jobs going instantaneously obsolete,

Innovation suddenly becoming impotent,

Credit rapidly evaporating,

Medical needs competing with feeding ourselves,

Stress escalating to breaking points,

And "life goes on" assuming new meaning,

In unemployment lines, welfare offices,

Food pantries, shelters...without the Dream.
