Obsolescence

Buggies, typewriters, slide rules, rotary phones —

What do these yesteryear indispensibles have in common?

Broad-scale acceptance fading into obsolescence.

What's next to go, as the world inexorably progresses?

Will it be the Global Positioning System, text messaging,

The Internet's intricate Web itself?

And as for the fate of oil and coal's supplanters —

Wind, solar, geothermal energy —

Who can say? Cold fusion?

Sadly, all today's gurus in information technology,

Pioneers in metallurgy, quantum-gravity theory,

Visionaries in pharmacology, agriculture, manufacturing,

Suffer from the all-too-human deficit of necessary hindsight

From future vantage points they'll never reach,

For not having confederated to replace death with forever.
