Having Faith

I knew a soul, once upon a long-ago once,

Who possessed the most fundamental plan

For pursuing happiness and peace in every-man's-land:

He promised himself he'd advocate and enact,

No matter what adverse forces might batter his faith,

The golden rule of mutual respect,

That most ennobling and enlightening of human creeds —

Decency due all people and creatures, equally,

Honoring the dignity of life, denying rapacity, tyranny, murder.

But despite proselytizing his humble gospel,

By practicing what he preached, to the tiniest word and deed,

He met with cynicism and hostility. Mobs stoned him.

Even children shamed him, with singsong imprecations.

Everyone assumed his kindness belied a "hidden agenda,"

That he was "out to get something" from them.

One debilitatingly desperate day, he succumbed,

Retreated from the world, into shame, guilt, solitude,

And flagellated himself...until I died, for having had faith.
