L'Aquila
A disaster in Italy, this past Monday —
An earthquake in L'Aquila,
A town of Romanesque, Gothic, and Renaissance architecture,
Founded by Holy Roman Emperor Frederick II, in 1240...
The world shudders, from news of hundreds of deaths,
The sad uprooting of thousands,
Who, overnight, have become homeless souls
Scattered amidst the ruins.
Every bit as lamentable as the perishing of life
Is knowing that all means of restoring this historic place
Were buried, over the centuries,
With the brilliant guild skills of its artisans.
