Warmongering

After eight years of the Bush/Cheney "One Percent" doctrine,

Its hubristic, in-your-face, preemptive belligerence

Toward nations not even remotely threatening our peace,

I've begun, with skepticism, cynicism, disgust, and anger,

To rethink Hiroshima and Nagasaki,

In light of America's premeditated, unilateral invasion of Iraq.

And doing so, I've grown more agitated, nauseated, by the day,

Realizing that though we've experienced, since WWII,

Appeasements, reconciliations, surrenders, realignments, treaties,

We, as one species on this blessed planet,

Haven't learned anything about diplomacy, cooperation, harmony,

Rather yet regard each other as predators, aliens, enemies,

Who still don't know how to say, "Enough is enough."

Our innate hatreds fester, as does our rage to perpetuate evil,

Under the aegis of nationalistic pride, messianic certitude.

Casting back to those genocidal a.m.'s of August 6 and 9, 1945,

Cringing, shivering, convulsing, vaporizing to black-rain ash,

As Little Boy and Fat Man atomized two unsuspecting cities...

Casting back to that genocidal night of March 20, 2003,

When the most imposing arsenal of the world's only superpower

Unleashed its Shock and Awe, on Baghdad's sleepy sovereignty,

And decimated the security of its citizens and the world...

Casting back to an hour ago,

When I began the inchoate probings of my infuriated pen,

I don't need to ask myself why civilized, enlightened humankind

Has never been able to curb its gluttony for warmongering.

I know why: Satan, not God, created man.
