In Euphemism We Trust
"Extraordinary rendition." "Enhanced interrogation techniques." "Sleep management." "Special methods of questioning." "Mild, noninjurious physical contact." Why not call it like it is, Dispense with the ambiguous euphemisms, Stop distracting ourselves, as a "law-abiding" nation, From the truth that the Bush/Cheney junta, the CIA, Circumvented the Geneva Convention, By promulgating defiance of justice — Denying detainees court-appointed defense, swift trials, In lieu of indeterminate incarceration For alleged crimes against an ostensible enemy, All in the name of protecting America from "terrorists"? Indeed, why not call it like it is, Just call our wartime intelligence-gathering tactics "Torture," Admit we're too devious, sadistic, and weak To be worthy of our own Bill of Rights?
