Dream Job

By 2050, so I've heard,

There'll be a third more Homo sapiens roaming planet Earth,

Nine billion seething, swarming, amebic, starving souls,

Doing everything in their helpless, hapless, hopeless means

To keep creeping ennui, anarchy, anomie

From Malthusizing mankind into nonexistence's silent anonymity.

So be it. So much for apocalyptic prophecies,

Godless futures that have no future beyond their own recent past.

Don't the metropolitan masses suffer these conditions, right now —

Mumbai 19,200,000; Shanghai 16,650,000; Seoul 20,550,000;

New York 19,750,000; Delhi 18,600,000; Djakarta 18,900,000;

Manila 16,300,000; Tokyo 32,450,000; Mexico City 20,450,000?

As Czar of the U.N. Council on Population Control and Extermination,

I'm e-mailed, thousands of times, daily, by the Secretary General,

"What more can you do to halt humanity's metastasizing malaise?"

As gasser, stoker of furnaces, burialist, vital-records shredder,

I refuse to answer his hysterical, robotically generated question,

On the grounds that if I do so, with honesty of forethought,

Confess that it's precisely by hyperexponentiating propagation

That the world will overrun itself, run itself over its own cliff,

I'll obsolete my dream job, be demoted to Stirpiculture & Eugenics.
