A Clean Entry

Just weeks ago, here in St. Louis,

The philanthropic pillar of our Jewish community,

A construction-magnate believer in tikkun olam,

A devout advocate of the State of Israel's perpetuity,

Threw himself, at 102, off the Daniel Boone Bridge —

The essential facts of the man, his dossier.

What else can anyone say, really,

When a gesture conveys more than does rhetoric —

A wide-eyed, palms-up, furrowed-brow shrug,

That universal display of perplexity?

That he was a champion swimmer and diver, in college,

Could, conceivably, shed some insight

Not so much on the motivating whys of his suicide

As on the potentially symbolic intent of his act,

Add, to its grisly reality, a redemptive layer —

A stoicism which might outlive his morbid departure,

The possibility that his was an orchestrated dive,

An ultimate rising to the occasion

When a lifetime reaches the end of the board,

Hoping to achieve maximum spring, height, a clean entry.
