As America Burns
Even as America's modern-day version of ancient Rome burns,
Explodes, implodes, black-holes into itself,
Morally, racially, politically, religiously, financially,
You and I, naively, innocuously, watch it pass by,
As it flies out of its civilization's briefly allotted orbit,
Faster than the speed of enlightened disbelief,
And we shake our heads, quizzically, exclaiming "My, my, my!"
"Tut, tut!" "So be it!" "So what?" "Fuck it!"
"What's it to us, anyway? We're exempt, above it all,"
Not realizing, for a lonely moment,
As we feast on Dom Pérignon and Beluga caviar,
That the end times have finally arrived, to escort us home.
