Tour de Lance

Just imagine,

A nation once so skeptical of, spiteful and hostile toward, an athlete

That it would spit on him, curse him, throw things at him,

As he pedaled his bicycle through the Pyrenees and Alps,

Eight times around the Champs-Élysées —

Two-thousand-plus miles of prolonged, sadomasochistic torment —

On his immemorial way to seven consecutive Tour de France victories

(An astonishing feat of modern-day-Greek-god mythology)...

Just imagine, for the three weeks recently elapsed into history,

That same nation honoring the thirty-seven-year-old American rider,

After his four years of retirement, with adulation,

Revering his performance as the epitome of valor, ultimate heroism,

No matter that victory, this time, was third place on the podium,

Over five minutes behind a man more than a decade his junior...
Just imagine! Vive la France! Vive Lance!
