Lions and Tigers

There was a wondrous cluster of years,

Beginning in our late forties and lasting at least a decade,

When you and I knew how to tame time,

Like circus trainers coaxing wild lions and tigers

To leap through flaming hoops, without trepidation, and survive —

Ferocious felines performing miraculously graceful feats,

To myriad audiences near and far-flung,

Exciting them and us, with their ecstatic derring-do stunts,

Until one ominous afternoon,

In our late fifties, time growled, roared, leaped from its stools,

Caught us off guard, without our whips, tongue-tied,

Terrified to our very marrow,

Realizing we'd lost control over those beautiful creatures,

Which had brought out the best in our feral souls

Merely by requiring us to respect their wildness and our own.

These days, our circus extravaganza has disbanded,

And our exquisitely conditioned lions and tigers

Have been set loose, to fend for themselves.

We've gone our separate, anonymous ways, as well.

Not even a trace of that amazing act remains in our memories.
