Romance

The nine Bradford pear trees,

Embracing the perimeters of this patio, and I

Have this Tuesday night all to ourselves.

To be sure, we don't mind.

Quite the contrary, both of us, solitudinous by nature,

Prefer not to share our company, with others.

It's reassuring, knowing words unspoken between us

Convey our deepest emotions,

Intimacies evoked by the slightest shiver of a breeze.

We meet here, five nights a week,

From unpredictable mid-April to crisp late-October,

Exchanging notions, secrets, hopes, dreams.

How else could it be, for lovers as devoted as we?

Every evening is a rhapsody, a full moon,

No matter rain, heat, chill, conversation, street noise.

Tonight, on this patio, is hardly an exception.

The pear trees and I listen to crickets choiring,

Our intermingling spirits singing, romance in our eyes.
