It All Has to Do

It all has to do with achieving freedom,

By leaving sarcasm and mean-spirited cynicism in our dust,

Once we catch a glimpse of the Promised Land's glimmer —

Canaan shimmering as a gleam in our eye,

Reaching out to make peace with our deepest insecurities,

Those demons that keep following us home,

To the undersides of our rocks, the dark sides of our moons,

The Turbo marmoratus shells we tote on our backs,

Sleep in, during the bleak, black nights of our unsaved souls,

Bed down with us, in our wormlike perversions of lust.

It all has to do with molting our despicable misanthropy,

Deciding that compassion and charity, tikkun olam,

Not self-interest, parsimony, and hubris,

Are the keys to the Old City's golden gates,

Which open onto the purlieus of our righteous hearts.
