Silent Thanks

This joyous Thanksgiving evening,

A night festive with the bounties of family warmth,

I'm the eccentric one, the wraith in coat and tie,

Seated in the far-back corner, at a table all to myself,

Picking away at a seafood-salad appetizer,

Scribbling, meticulously, in a notepad,

These two solitary preoccupations

Substitutes for conversation conspicuously missing.

"What are you doing here, you pathetic waif?

Don't you know this celebration isn't for loners?"

The eyes scrutinize me, from their insular distances,

Even as I recede into my serene anonymity,

Not shackled to sad, maddening disillusionment,

Free to give thanks

For blessings yet coalescing, hopes still evolving.

To the eyes, I reply, "I'm happy being alone, with you."
