Turkey Dinner
A few days before this recent Thanksgiving,
I received a smoked turkey from a close old friend,
Which I intended to serve myself.
When I asked my cleaning lady of twenty-five years
What her plans were, for the holiday,
She told me she'd invited thirty of her church "family,"
Who'd otherwise not have a dinner, to her house.
Long ago, I discovered that the best gifts I can bestow,
On those I love, are ones that spring spontaneously,
Say, "You mean more to me than I do to myself."
And so it was, on Thursday evening,
Though I was home alone,
That I enjoyed the best Thanksgiving ever:
A peanut-butter sandwich and turkey-noodle soup.
