Sunday-Morning Sermon

Early this Sunday morning,

Casting off the shackles, the shadows, of its past,

My spirit slithers out from its nest of ancient nightmares,

Into its fate's waiting skin,

Assumes its latest hybrid disguise, that of a Catholic mind-snake,

Presbyterian ground slider, and Baptist belly crawler,

Undulating through the dense lines of Old Testament Scripture

Circumscribing Eden, where disobeying Adam lingered with Eve,

His easily subverted helpmate, and her deceitful ways.

And now, on this day of rest, when every churchgoer, worldwide,

Is smugly singing the praises of his Lord Jesus' glory,

Taking communion with His metaphysical body and blood,

Hoping to make amends for earthly transgressions,

Beseech God-in-three-persons to admit him/her

Into the grace transcending Resurrection, into heaven's embrace,

I rise to my full six-foot length, behind my pulpit,

Preaching that God is an idolater, a false god, no god at all,

A fraud, shaman, snake-oil salesman (pardon the intentional pun).

And where do you think this brash antic lands me?

You know: a speaking-in-tongues-by-the-seat-of-my-brow beating,

By thousands of congregations drowning in visions of Revelation,

Doom descending as plagues of viper-shaped lightning bolts,

Threatening to take out entire post-Pharaonic populations,

From San Francisco to Banda Aceh, New Orleans to Port-au-Prince.

Ah, the horror, the degradation, the painful human suffering

Accruing to the sinful descendants of disobedient Adam,

While I slither back to my nest...satisfied with my day's labors.
