Quiet Nights

My nights have grown so quiet,

These twilight days of my life's denouement,

That I don't even know how to live them, anymore.

Some evenings, I almost believe death has preceded me,

In death,

Staked claim to the kingdom of my soul's lost colony,

And decided the direction, trajectory, and destination

Of what's left of the exploratory journey

That started in quietude not unlike this quietus.

Tonight, I press my ear to earth's breast,

Listening for the thump-thump-thump of my heartbeat.

All I hear is time ticking, ticking, ticking.
