North Woods Menu

What I find myself eating, exclusively, with immense joy,

When my spirit is on needed retreat

In this off-the-beaten-path village in Wisconsin,

Is almost the stuff reaped, in simpler times,

By Chippewa and Potawatomi hunter-gatherers,

Sustenance plucked from bushes, bogs, leafy trees, shrubs,

Dug up from the soil, caught in the waters, killed in the wild:

Almonds, walnuts, cashews, pecans,

Apples, pears, plums, peaches, bananas,

Blueberries, blackberries, raspberries, strawberries, cranberries,

Carrots, beans, zucchini, asparagus, lettuces, mushrooms,

Garlic, peppers, tomatoes, red, white, and sweet potatoes,

Lake trout, walleye, northern pike, smallmouth bass, salmon,

Chicken (the only other meat I consider, and then infrequently).

Spartan, austere, eminently fundamental,

These comestibles provide me with dietary fiber, protein, vitamins,

Keep my body relatively fat free, lean, satisfied,

My mind not weighed down by carbohydrate-induced lethargy,

My spirit light on its fleet feet, eager to soar, dream,

Not tied to a desk-bound routine of snacking and gorging,

My soul focused on harvesting the cosmos, for its wholeness.
