Back to Nature

Well, all right, OK!

It's about time things got back to normal, wouldn't you say,

In and around these parts of this neck of the woods.

I mean, come on! What gives?

This kind of crazy, quirky weather's just dead wrong.

You can't shit me, Mr. 63 Degrees, not for this long, anyway.

After all, when you've been living here long as me

And like all of us hardy villagers,

Who don't have the funds to winter six months elsewhere's it's warm,

You know that March ain't supposed to be June and July combined

But down in the thirties, twenties, tens...

Below zero as easy as above, depending on the wind, the snow,

And as for the iced-over lake,

Who's ever heard of it leaving the shore before April, earliest —

Not like the way it is today, anyway,

When you'd need a thirty-foot bridge, at least,

Just to step out onto the slush, assuming you'd be stupid enough,

Knowing you could fall through your own augered fishing hole.

Well, leastways, it's back in the low thirties, this Friday,

No sun, all gray-black snow clouds hovering at high noon,

Teens tonight, wind nastier than a buzz saw at your naked ass.

Back to normal, frigid as it is, suits me far better.

At least a man don't have to guess where he's living,

Wonder if Phoenix's Sun City has moved to Lake Nebagamon.

Truth is, me and my neighbors prefer it being fucking cold —

Discourages folks from Cicero, St. Louis, Gary moving here,

Buying up all our shoreline, sending our taxes through the ceiling,

Leaving us out in the cold, summer as well as winter.

Far's I'm concerned, it could snow next forty days, forty nights,

In a row or otherwise — anything to get nature back to nature.
