Going South

Just this past week,

I've read about hypocrisy warp-and-woofing the fabric

Of America's military and political strategy

For winning the hearts and minds of the Afghani people,

Teaching them to follow, eagerly, our messianic lead,

In craving freedom, democracy, peace —

The foundations of our humanistic dream of enlightenment,

No matter that the road to salvation on earth

Often snakes through mendacious, vain, deceitful terrain,

Requires abiding inflated rhetoric based on blatant lies

That conspire against right reason, decency,

Vow, disingenuously, to eradicate an entire poppy crop

While allowing exceptions in regions where we "occupiers"

Feel that burning the pods will send us the way of the Russians.

But if reading about the U.S./Marja loopholes

Weren't justification enough for moral indignation, disgust,

As to why we, as a nation, are perpetrating a grave mistake,

How about President Karzai's "troubling," "confusing" remarks,

Expressing his willingness to side with the Taliban

If his allies (i.e., the U.S.) don't butt out of his business:

"Afghanistan is the home of Afghans, and we own this place."

Having been rebuffed, upbraided, castigated, throttled, flogged,

Backed into a spider hole, like Saddam Hussein,

By a truculent, less-than-diplomatic Obama administration,

Demanding compliance with an eradication of corruption,

Karzai lashed out, told America to go fuck itself,

Even as it's gearing up to drive the Taliban from Kandahar,

The largest city in the south...the Karzai family's hometown.
