Embraced
Across the United States, this last Saturday in April,
National Dance Week
Is being celebrated by those who've been embraced
In Terpsichore's spirited passion
For soaring free, with gravityless euphoria,
Exploring space opening beneath their restless feet,
Seeking to catch a fleeting glimpse of eternity
Or at least a sensation of earthly perfectibility —
Precious seconds' worth of breathless ecstasy —
Gratifying their athletic obsessions
For balletic, jazz, tap, modern, and ethnic dance,
Adhering to the classic forms or reinventing them.
And who, merely spectating, would ever guess
That to possess just one of those stolen moments
Requires thousands of practice sessions,
Thousands of missteps, thousands of aches,
Thousands of setbacks, heartbreaks,
To make it all look unpracticed, graceful, painless?
