The State of Things

Now that I've spent my first night here,

In tranquil, serenely dreamless, restful sleep,

And awakened, fresh, to the resident Lares and Penates,

Which will bless my nine-day visit, with joyousness,

I sense it's time to assess the state of this domain.

What comes, immediately, to my attention

Is that the inviting silence I left inside, last March, abides.

The dock, which had been hauled up onto shore,

Spared winter's icy savagery, is back in place,

Ready for me to take my initial steps on it since September.

Ah, but I see, from the decomposing mounds of sere stalks,

That the cattails I so love, for their primal rapaciousness,

Have been hacked down, since my previous visit.

Yet, in a fifty-foot-wide swath along the shore, fifteen feet out,

New green shoots are already breaking the lake's surface.

The rest is insignificant.

Though this rental cabin is fitted with the standard amenities,

Without which civilization seems quintessentially adrift —

TV, VCR, CD player, microwave, washer and dryer —

I keep occupied with my pen, notebook, and reading.

But what I don't yet see, for being here less than a day,

Is what I'm certain is waiting for me to discover it.

Though I can't predict its nature,

I know it will recognize me, assess the state of my verse,

As I find myself flowing with the lines of its poetry.
