Skygazing

I can't remember when, in my frenetic lifetime,

A yawn, at day's end,

Ever engendered such serenity, equanimity,

Felt so satisfying, so relaxing, so good

As it does this Wednesday twilight,

When the sun is descending into the trees' embrace

And the near-half moon is rising to night's heights,

Following the direction its solar guide took,

To the ultimate extremities of the sky,

Where stars flicker like planes, satellites, memories

And constellations strut, in its theater in the round.

After four way-too-short hours,

Relaxing on a bench at the end of this spacious dock,

Focusing deeply into the clear near atmosphere,

Gazing, meditating, searching for eternity,

I spy, in Lake Nebagamon's acre of the galaxy,

Familiar signs from my childhood:

The Big and Little Dippers,

Both with three-starred handles, four-starred cups,

The larger of the ladles just above the moon,

Pouring, into its waxing bowl,

The milky glow that illumines the whole universe.
