Relationships

If a seven-hundred-acre lake

Were staring you square in the face,

Right off your cabin's back porch,

Would you have a clue

As to its relationship with you?

Speaking strictly for myself,

I can tell you how essential it is —

Its elemental presence

Flows through my arteries and veins,

Nurturing my spirit —

Since I'm a smallmouth bass, a walleye,

A patch of six-foot-tall cattails,

A Canada gander,

A loon communing with the full moon,

A ripple disguised as a man.
