Strawberry Breakfasts
What a gratifying treat, to be feasting on strawberries,
First thing after waking,
And not the commercially farmed variety
(Trucked in from Mexico, Florida, California), either,
But the sweetest, most delectable, juiciest I've ever eaten.
Picking my own, close to my home away from home,
Every unplanned chance I get to do so,
Reminds me how much I thrive on a fundamental diet
Of fruits, vegetables, legumes, and nuts
And yet how estranged I am, from the land.
In the city, whenever I consume supermarket berries,
They don't even taste like they're grown in soil.
Here, for less than the price of two mocha lattes,
I have enough to last the next ten breakfasts.
Perhaps I'd better extend my stay a few extra days.
