Back Gate

Because camp's off-limits, this one season, when the boys return,

I'm compelled to alter my route, take a detour, veer,

Steering clear of its back gate,

Where East Waterfront Drive abruptly ceases,

Forced to explore other paths, closer to my cabin.

Though my power walks must be relegated to village streets,

I'm able to lose myself to the seclusion movement engenders

Whenever I convert oxygen into energy, breath into inspiration,

As I descend amidst the purest realms of meditation,

To discover unknown zones of my psyche's cosmos.

Today, I've arrived at one such unreckoned destination:

A back gate being held wide open by a blond-headed boy,

Waving, beckoning me to enter, follow him to Swamper Four.

I gaze yearningly, before turning around, resuming my brisk pace,

Not wanting to alter the route of my personal history.
