Book Signing in Lake Nebagamon

Never would I have imagined

(And I imagined capaciously, with immoderate, prodigal abandon),

As I gave my soul over

To going with the flow of these slow, peaceful surrounds,

Penning line after stanza after poem after poem,

Which eventually found a home in At Water's Edge,

That, three years after I wrote the first of these verses,

I'd be sitting at a table in downtown Lake Nebagamon,

In front of the red-log auditorium, on the Saturday before the Fourth,

Offering for sale, personally inscribing, my new book,

Which pays homage to this tiny village.

Never would I have imagined

That my lyrics extolling this remote North Woods region,

Its rustic folkways and lore, its enduring outdoors allure,

Could blend yet another voice

Into the dialogue between this community and nature,

Infuse the wind, water, trees, and stars with an eloquence

They might convey, in speaking to those purchasing my book,

Locals eager to learn if a sojourner like me might, in mere words,

Have captured the rapture they inherit by circumstance of birth.

Never would I have imagined that these poems, composed in isolation,

Could touch so many I've only known through solitude.
