Enlightenment

"When attachment ends, serenity commences,"

So a Bodhisattva, older than ancient,

Once told me, in a moment of transcendence.

For years, I held his sacred words

Close to my bosom, deep in my soul,

Until one lonely weekend, on retreat,

I saw my revered master, mentor, again,

Weeping unconsolably,

Repeating, "Emptiness isn't enlightenment."

And I knew, in a torrent of satori,

That infinite tranquillity

Is nothing more than death of the mind.
