Thanks

Residing beside a lake no matter how outsize or inconsequential

Is a privilege few seeking solitude ever experience in a lifetime,

Yet it's mine with each sojourn.

Indeed, each day my spirit awakens here, in this village,

Is cause enough for spontaneous celebration,

An occasion for doing sacrifices to the rising sun, ascending moon,

A ritual in revelation, epiphany, ecstasy, spirituality, divinity,

A devotional ceremony to hope, peace, harmony, serenity, love,

Nature's way of saying yes to its communion with human life.

This midnight hour, sitting at my kitchen table, naked,

Listening to the companionable rain pelt my northern-Wisconsin roof,

I give boundless thanks for the glorious abundance of this land,

Thanks for its too-short-lived evergeen-scented summer fecundity,

Thanks for its forests, teeming with moss, lichen, fungi, ferns,

Thanks for its ducks, geese, eagles, woodpeckers, kingfishers, loons,

Thanks for the plenitude of its balsams, cedars, firs, spruces, pines,

Thanks for its birches, aspens, tamaracks, poplars, maples, oaks,

Thanks for its walleyes, "brookies," bluegills, perches, pickerels, basses,

Thanks for its chipmunks, otters, beavers, squirrels, skunks, deer, bears,

Thanks for its Brules, Bayfields, Ashlands, Washburns, Lake Nebagamons,

Thanks for its remoteness, isolation, seclusion, obscurity,

Thanks for its willingness to welcome me, sight, scent, and sound unseen,

Into its magnanimously compassionate fold,

Thanks for its simplicity, in which I evangelize silence, in my own time,

And thanks for the abiding great ancient spirit of singing harmonies,

For allowing me to take my place, as well, in this universe,

And write the lyrics it hymns in the treetops, waves, and stars.
