Tidal Pool

Today's soft, silvery-gray rain is as inviting as sunshine,

And we're eager to walk amidst the drizzle,

Share the precious hours of our last complete day

Here in the sheer rapture that's Laguna Beach,

Exploring the inspiring coastline of our passion for each other.

This is a quiet time in the shop-nestled downtown.

The parks, restaurants, galleries, streets take a deep breath.

Tourists have packed up their Christmas gifts, New Year's vows,

And headed back to their other lives.

We've stayed, not yet having sated our capacity for discovery.

This afternoon, never quite out of the brisk, misty rain's reach,

We'll defer power-walking Dana Point Harbor,

Eat under the covered porch's heaters, at Nick's,

After viewing the exhibits on display in the city art museum,

Then return to our resort, for a fitness-center workout.

But as we reach our silver-blue and blond ocean-facing room,

The sun's rays, shrouded, all day, in dingy clouds,

Pull back our down comforter, satin bedsheets, undress us,

And invite us into a tidal pool of heated serenity.

For a time, the sky and sea lave us, with their waves.
